“Gallons Per Second”

In today’s fire service fires are burning hotter and reaching flashover conditions at a much quicker rate. This seminar will focus on exceeding fire flow needs and managing water during the initial hose-line advancement in an interior offensive attack. The lecture will provide a different approach in terms of water application in a “Gallons Per Second” perspective at this crucial stage in the firefight.  Strategies will be presented to manage the booster tank supply until a sustainable water supply has been established. This class is extremely relevant for companies that commonly engage in fire suppression with booster tank water supply and deploy suburban fire tactics.

INSTRUCTOR BIO:  Chief Isakson is a 23-year veteran of the fire service. He started in 1988 with Midway Fire Rescue, where he advanced to Captain in change of training. He was a Fire Inspector for a short time with the City of Mary Ester FD. Chief Isakson was with the Pensacola Fire Department for 9 years where he advanced to Company Officer on the Rescue Company. Chief Isakson has been with Escambia County Fire Rescue since 2000 and was the first training officer for the newly formed department. Chief Isakson was promoted to Battalion Chief in January of 2004.

In the fire service we tend to apply practices simply because that’s the way it has been done for years. This class will dispel some of the myths pervasive in today’s fire service, along with the importance of conducting a proper size-up. This lecture will cover the importance of proper apparatus positioning and the significance of the initial attack line. The instruction will include several tactical considerations for modern suburban homes and how to keep those involved with the operation safe. Water supply will also be discussed as whether to attack on booster tank water or secure a water source. The different tactical considerations of multiple family occupancies will be reviewed with the methods of performing the tasks.

INSTRUCTOR BIO: Captain Bill Gustin is a 38-year veteran of the Fire Service and a Captain on the Miami-Dade County (FL) Fire-Rescue Dept. He began his career as a volunteer firefighter in the Chicago area and is a lead instructor in Miami-Dade’s Company Officer Development Program. Captain Gustin is a marine firefighting.
